Automation in a new market segment

PIA Automation secures project in the food sector
PIA Automation has entered the food industry with its first project, marking a strategic expansion into a new, demanding market. Near Erfurt, Germany, the company is developing a system for the automated feeding and singulation of bread roll dough pieces for a subsidiary of a German food group. The solution enhances an existing production line, contributing to improved process stability and increased efficiency in industrial food processing.
Rising demands in food production
The food industry is undergoing a significant transformation. Growing consumer expectations regarding product variety and availability are driving manufacturers to continuously expand their portfolios. At the same time, regulatory requirements for quality, process reliability, and hygiene are becoming increasingly stringent.
As a result, automation of these production processes is gaining importance. In particular, areas such as baked goods processing, as well as sorting and handling operations, are reaching the limits of existing systems in terms of throughput, flexibility, and hygienic design. Consequently, the need is rising for solutions that combine industrial-scale performance with the specific requirements of food production.
Automated roll feeding as a line extension
With this project, PIA is directly addressing these current market developments. The new system automates the feeding and singulation of dough pieces, processing up to 400 rolls per minute, and integrates seamlessly into the existing system architecture. It meets strict hygiene standards for food processing and is designed for quick and easy cleaning. In addition, the system accommodates a wide range of product variants and formats, enabling flexible production across different product categories.
A strategic step built on proven automation expertise
In executing this project, PIA leverages proven technologies and competencies from its other business segments, such as medical device manufacturing.
“The trust placed in us by our customer and the close partnership have been key factors in our successful entry into this new market,” says Stefan Seidnitzer, Branch Manager at PIA Automation’s service location in Erfurt. “We are especially pleased to apply our automation expertise, which we have demonstrated across numerous industries, to the specific requirements of the food sector.”
