Assembly of electric drives with an innovative complete system
As sustainability and environmental protection become increasingly important, electric drives play a vital role. They are central to electro-mobility and make a significant contribution to reducing CO² emissions and lowering dependence on fossil fuels.
PIA Automation has once again demonstrated its expertise and innovation by successfully installing a cutting-edge, fully integrated system for electric drive assembly in both China and Europe.
The system consists of 75 stations, featuring a combination of fully and semi-automated processes. With an impressive cycle time of just 55 seconds and a batch size of one, it is specifically engineered to assemble electric drives with maximum precision and efficiency. Core processes include pressing, screwing, sealant application, disk measurement, stator and rotor installation, induction heating, testing, cover-to-housing assembly, and wheelset combing.
Success through flexibility and international collaboration
Installing the line across two continents posed a unique challenge, particularly due to the need to meet CE design standards.
PIA overcame this through outstanding international project management and strong cooperation between its global locations.
The team also demonstrated flexibility in adapting to evolving customer requirements—including relocating the installation from China to Germany.

Know-how and precision are crucial
A standout feature of this project is the sensitivity of the core processes to potential component damage. Precise positioning — ranging from the workpiece carrier to the gripper systems and other component holders — is critical to ensuring high system availability and output. To safeguard sensitive electronics over the long term, dedicated areas with ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection have also been integrated.
The system is designed to produce two different variants of electric drives, underscoring its flexibility and adaptability.
“With this project, PIA has once again proven why we’re the preferred partner for advanced automation solutions. Our blend of technical excellence, international project management, and the agility to adapt to evolving requirements positions us as a leader in this field.”
