In today's world where the demand for sustainable and efficient energy storage solutions is constantly growing, battery modules play a crucial role.
The assembly of these modules requires precise and reliable technologies in order to meet the high quality standards and safety requirements. We have developed a high-end battery module assembly line for our customer in Southern California, which specializes in the development and production of lithium-ion batteries. The system will produce battery modules with a total capacity of 10 kWh, packaged with high efficiency and performance in mind.
Faster to success through global collaboration
The PIA sites of USA, Canada and Germany worked closely together on this order. The Bad Neustadt and Toronto site designed and built equipment, and these were combined with the PIAUS designed and built equipment. Everything came together in Evansville, IN. for final assembly and commissioning. PIA Bad Neustadt had already completed a similar project for a customer in Italy. The global project team used this know-how and benefited from the experience gained.
The highlight of the system is the laser welding station
To ensure that the process could be implemented quickly and precisely, the position of a row of cells is checked using a camera in parallel with the welding of the row that has already been checked - a total of 32 cells are lasered at once and the entire module is lasered in 4 minutes. In addition, PIA developed a special finger geometry that held the battery connections in position during laser welding while ventilating excess debris and fumes.

In addition to the automation expertise in battery assembly, the customer was also impressed by PIA's collaborative approach: this was not only evident in the cooperation within the global PIA network, but also in the fact that PIA placed great value on a partnership-based relationship with its customers.
